The United States will soon consider additional sanctions against Russia under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA). This was stated by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
“The US will consider additional sanctions in the near term under CAATSA and the European Energy Security Act (PEESA)”, – Pompeo said in a written statement.
“If Nord Stream 2 is completed, it will give Russia the opportunity to completely bypass Ukraine, depriving it of vital income and opening it up to further aggressive Russian actions, as well as providing funds for using natural resources as a tool of pressure and malicious influence in Western Europe. Today’s announcement of sanctions demonstrates that the US is not afraid to hold accountable those who continue to help and condone this Russian instrument of coercion”.
