US imposes sanctions on Chinese oil giant

Donald Trump’s administration has imposed a new package of anti-China sanctions days before 46th President Joe Biden takes office

The punitive measures, according to the State Department, were imposed on the pretext that China is putting pressure on countries claiming influence in the South China Sea.

“The United States supports Southeast Asian claimant states seeking to protect their sovereign rights and interests under international law”, –  Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said. – “We will continue to act until we see Beijing cease its pressure in the South China Sea.

Thus, a number of officials of Chinese state-owned enterprises and the military were put under sanctions. In addition, the CNOOC oil company was blacklisted.
