On Wednesday, the Democratic-controlled US House of Representatives passed a resolution to impeach incumbent President Donald Trump. The document was supported by 232 legislators, including 10 Republicans, and 197 opposed.
Trump is charged with one article – incitement to rebellion. The current American leader became the first president in US history to be impeached twice. The first attempt took place in 2019, but then the GOP-controlled Senate acquitted Trump.
The reason for the impeachment was the statements of the American leader on the day of the riots at the Congress on January 6. A spokesman on behalf of Democrat David Cisilini on Monday presented the initiative to the House of Representatives. According to the Democrats, it was after Trump’s calls that a crowd of people began storming the Capitol in order to prevent the approval of the results of the presidential election, which was won by Joe Biden.
“Today the House of Representatives has demonstrated that no one is above the law, not even the President of the United States. Donald Trump poses a clear and urgent danger to our country. We have once again fulfilled our vow to defend the US Constitution”, – said Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives.
The further procedure involves the transfer of the indictment to the Senate, where the trial will begin. However, the Senate will not have time to impeach the president before his term expires. According to the legislature’s timetable, the Senate will be able to consider this issue only after the end of Trump’s presidential term.
