The UK government intends to tighten rules on trade with China in the face of oppression of the Uyghurs, British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said in a speech in parliament on Tuesday.
According to him, in response to all inquiries from the UK, Western countries and the UN about the PRC, he denies the violation of human rights against the Uyghurs. Britain cannot stand aside and intends to take concrete action against companies from Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Raab said.
In particular, it is planned to tighten control over exports from the specified region, as well as to ban government contracts with companies that do not comply with procurement rules.
“This package will help ensure that no UK organization, government or private sector, knowingly or unintentionally, benefits or contributes to human rights violations against Uighurs or other minorities in Xinjiang”, – the minister said.
Earlier, the United Kingdom and the United States accused China of oppressing the Uighurs and other Muslim groups, violating human rights, including in Tibet and the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The Chinese authorities rejected all accusations and criticism, calling not to interfere in exclusively the internal affairs of the country.
