PGA Championship in 2022 will not be held at New Jersey complex
The Professional Golfers Association of America (PGA of America) has refused to hold one of the four major tournaments of the year at a course owned by incumbent US President Donald Trump due to recent riots that culminated in the storming of the US Congress building. This was reported by the Associated Press on Sunday.
The 2022 PGA Championship was to be held at Trump’s New Jersey complex.
PGA head Jim Richerson said the organisation’s board had voted to exercise the option to terminate the agreement. The PGA, which has around 29,000 members, signed a contract to hold tournaments at Trump’s complex in 2014.
Trump owns a number of other golf courses in the US and UK.
On Wednesday, Trump supporters stormed the US Congress building to prevent approval of the results of the country’s presidential election last November 3, which was won by Democrat Joseph Biden. During the unrest in Washington, a demonstrator was shot and killed by Capitol police. In addition, three other unrelated deaths were reported as medical emergencies.
