Former Pentagon chief William Perry said that to reduce the risks of large-scale hostilities it is necessary to change the system of control over U.S. nuclear capabilities, reports Politico
“In minutes, Trump could launch hundreds of nukes or one. He doesn’t need a second opinion on that. The defence secretary has no say. Congress has no role”, – Perry said.
He said he believes this situation could be fixed by sharing the authority to use nuclear weapons with a group of members of the US Congress. Such reform should be undertaken by President-elect Joe Biden, the former Pentagon chief believes.
In addition, Perry says, Biden should declare that the United States “will never start a nuclear war and will only use the bomb in response”.
Recall that William Perry was U.S. Secretary of Defense from 1994 to 1997.
