US Vice President Michael Pence has said he does not rule out the possibility of resorting to the 25th Amendment of the Constitution to remove current US President Donald Trump from office because of his “incapacity”, CNN reports
According to the broadcaster’s sources, Pence’s team expects not to have to appeal against Trump’s incapacity, which the amendment stipulates: this procedure could provoke additional risks to the country’s security.
However, CNN sources point out that Pence has not ruled out the possibility of invoking the amendment if “Trump’s behaviour becomes even less predictable”. Under the 25th Amendment, the US vice president takes over as head of state in the event of an early termination of the president’s powers, incapacitating him.
On Wednesday, supporters of incumbent US President Donald Trump stormed the US Congress building to prevent the results of the 3 November 2020 presidential election, which was won by Democrat Joe Biden. Five people were killed in the rioting.
