The Associated Press reports that divers have discovered the possible crash site of the plane
“We have received reports from the diving team that visibility in the water is good, allowing us to locate some parts of the plane. We are confident that this is where the plane crashed”, – said Indonesian Air Marshal Hadi Tchahjanto.
The Indonesian military was able to find an oil slick that indicates the likely crash site of the airliner. The wreckage of the Boeing was found in the Java Sea at a depth of 23 metres.
Earlier, the head of Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency, Bagus Puruhito, said rescuers had recorded a signal that most likely came from the Boeing’s flight recorders. Experts are now searching for it.
The Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737-500 plane was on its way from Jakarta to Pontiac. According to Flightradar24 aviation service, the airliner lost more than 3,000 kilometres of altitude in less than a minute. There were 50 passengers and 12 crew on board.
