US postpones plans to impose duties on luxury French class goods

The U.S. trade mission threatened to impose duties last year after France imposed a 3% tax on local revenue from tech giants like Facebook Inc. and Amazon.com Inc., which sparked protests from Washington. The duties were to take effect on January 6th.

According to INTERFAX.RU, the US authorities have postponed plans to impose duties of 25% on luxury goods from France, announcing a desire to coordinate response actions with measures taken by other countries in similar situations.

“The decision to postpone tariff plans was greeted by US importers and retailers who criticized the measures as an attempt to protect one industry at the expense of another”, – writes The Wall Street Journal.

A spokesman for the French finance ministry said France did not suspend the tax or offer any concessions. The European Commission has previously announced that it is ready to impose duties on goods from the United States to support France.
