US Congress confirms Biden’s victory

Several hours after hundreds of supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the US Capitol, Congress officially confirmed the victory of Democrat Joe Biden in the elections.

Immediately after certification, the White House issued a statement from Trump promising an “orderly transition” on January 20 when Biden will be sworn in.

Congress resumed its work, certifying a Biden Electoral College victory late Wednesday night following the chaos on Capitol Hill, and debate continued until early Thursday morning.

Following debate, the Senate and House of Representatives rejected two objections to the vote count and affirmed the final vote of the Electoral College: Biden received 306 votes and Trump 232 votes.

Vice President Mike Pence, announcing the final vote for Biden’s victory, said it “would be considered a sufficient statement by the individuals elected as President and Vice President of the United States”.

Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will take office with Biden on January 20.
