John Ossoff wins second round from Georgia, handing over Senate control to Democrats

The Associated Press reported Wednesday that Democrat John Ossoff defeated Republican David Purdue in the second round of elections in Georgia, giving Democrats control of the US Senate.

Purdue, whose Senate term expired earlier this week, did not miss the race.

With the victories of Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, the US Senate is now 50-50. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will become the 51st vote deciding vote, giving Democrats control of the House.

For the first time since 2015, Democrats will control the Senate.
