US deploys strike drones to Romania

The US Air Force Europe and Africa Command says it has deployed MQ-9 Reaper reconnaissance strike drones and about 90 military personnel to an air base in the Romanian city of Cympia-Turzii

“The US Air Force has deployed MQ-9 Reaper drones and about 90 Air Force personnel to the 71st Air Base in Câmpia-Turzii, Romania, to conduct information gathering, surveillance and reconnaissance in support of NATO operations”, –  the command said in a statement posted on its website.

It is noted that the military and drones are being deployed for an “extended” period of time. According to U.S. Gen. Jeffrey Harrigian, who commands the U.S. Air Force in Europe and Africa, the deployment of UAVs to this strategic location “reassures allies and partners” but also “sends a message to adversaries” that a “response to any emerging threat” can be made.
