Biden looks forward to working with the incoming Congress to fight the pandemic

He also congratulated Nancy Pelosi on her re-election as Speaker of the House of Representatives

US President-elect Joseph Biden, a Democrat, has said he looks forward to working with the 117th Congress to fight the impact of the new coronavirus pandemic. He issued a statement to this effect on his Twitter page on Sunday.

“I look forward to working side by side with you to bring this virus under control and achieve the most effective recovery”, –  the politician stressed. He also sent congratulations to senators and congressmen.

In addition, Biden later published a personal congratulations to re-elected Speaker of the lower house Nancy Pelosi, in which he called her “one of the most effective and experienced lawmakers” in US history.

“I have no doubt that Speaker Pelosi will continue to lead the House of Representatives with dignity, based on her principles and unwavering patriotism”, –  he stressed. According to the president-elect, Pelosi shares his commitment to “defeat the pandemic, take action on climate change, bring equality and justice to society, and rebuild the economy.”

Newly Convened Congress

The incoming US Congress began its work on Sunday. Nancy Pelosi, 80, from the Democratic Party, was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives by a majority vote (216). She defeated Republican Kevin McCarthy, 55, with 209 votes.

As a result of the general election, the Democrats lost part of their seats, but managed to retain a majority in the lower house. The situation with the Senate is still unclear. It will be clear in a few days, after the second ballot in Georgia, who will be in control of the upper house.

One of the first tasks of the 117th Congress will be to approve the results of the presidential election on January 6 at the joint session of both chambers.

In November, Americans elected the president and vice president, all members of the 435-member House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate of Congress, and governors of 13 states and territories. Biden received 306 of the 538 electoral votes and is set to become the country’s 46th president. Incumbent Donald Trump won 232 votes but still does not concede defeat, claiming that the Democrats, through various manipulations of the count, stole the victory from him.
