The new 117th US Congress begins work in the US on Sunday
The country’s general election in November saw Democrats lose some seats but retain a majority in the House of Representatives. The situation in the Senate, on the other hand, remains unclear: it will become clear in a few days – after the second ballot in Georgia – who will be in control of the upper house of the US legislature.
The first thing that the incoming Congress will have to do is to certify the results of the country’s presidential election. As early as 3 January, the Director of the US National Archives will deliver to both chambers the lists of members of the electoral college certified by state governors. On 6 January, a joint session of the two chambers will be held to finally approve the results of the vote.
