Russia develops new laser weapons to fight drones

It is planned to create unified complexes of armoured vehicles and lasers, which will be designed to combat high-precision weapons. A radio-frequency system is being developed for the functional defeat of the electronic equipment of drones

Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexei Krivoruchko said that Russia is developing laser complexes to counter drones, opto-electronic and optical means of the enemy.

“Work is currently underway to develop other laser complexes to counter unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as enemy optics and optoelectronics”, –  Krivoruchko said in an interview with the Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper, recalling that the Peresvet laser complexes have been put on combat duty since the end of 2019.

The Peresvet laser system was the first Russian combat system based on new physical principles. The creation of the Russian combat laser was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin in an address to the Federal Assembly on 1 March 2018. The head of state did not go into detail about this type of weapon, noting only that “the availability of such combat systems multiplies Russia’s security capabilities”. Details of the complex are classified.
