Britain was an influential player in the European Union, which also had a tough anti-Russian policy. This obstacle has now been removed on its own
Relations between Russia and Europe have been marred since 2014 by the sanctions standoff. The EU has imposed anti-Russian sanctions in favour of US interests. This was triggered by the decision of Crimeans to return to Russia, as well as the Ukrainian aggression in Donbass.
Britain has often acted as a vehicle for US interests on the European stage. Now that the United Kingdom has withdrawn from the European Union, London will not be able to put obstacles in the way of Russian-European relations, believes Ayaz Aliyev, PhD in Economics. Brexit generally corresponds to Russia’s interests, the expert told EADaily.
“The strengthening of German influence in the international arena will as a result affect the prospects of Nord Stream-2, and good relations between Germany and Russia will eventually have a positive effect on energy supplies from Russia”, – Aliyev explained. – “The EU is Russia’s largest trade partner, and London has hindered this economic cooperation. In this respect, Britain’s withdrawal from the EU allows for building even friendlier EU-Russian relations.”
