Germany will not stop cooperating with Russia on the Nord Stream-2 project in the interests of the United States
For a long time, the US authorities have been trying to derail the construction of the pipeline that would allow the Europeans to purchase Russian gas at a bargain price. The prospect seriously undermined the position of the American companies on the European energy market, therefore Washington threatened with sanctions even to the EU countries.
According to German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, the launch of Nord Stream 2 has become a matter of principle for Berlin, as well as for the rest of Europe. Thus, if under the pressure of the United States the European Union will abandon the pipeline, from now on it will do everything that the Americans demand. Nord Stream 2 has turned from an economic project into a symbol of European independence, says the diplomat.
“But we cannot talk about European independence if we continue to do everything Washington demands”, – Maas said.
He admitted that a Joe Biden presidency in the US would not rule out disagreements between Berlin and Washington. Despite this, the sides need to have a common line on key strategic issues, the minister said.
