The European Commission has proposed that Britain should apply the Brexit deal provisionally because it will not be ratified before the end of the transitional period on December 31, 2020
“In light of these exceptional circumstances, the European Commission proposes to apply the agreement for a limited period until 28 February 2021”, – the EC said in a statement published on its official website.
The European Commission said it would draft an EU Council regulation on the signing and temporary application of the Brexit agreement. The 27 EU member states will then have to vote unanimously and only then can the agreement be signed. All this needs to be done before 1 January next year.
Once the agreement is signed, the European Parliament must approve the deal with the UK. Ratification by the EU will finalise the EU Council decision on the agreement. All these steps need to be taken by 28 February 2021.
As previously reported by News Front, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that London and Brussels had agreed on a trade deal. EC head Ursula von der Leyen confirmed his words.
