The UK, where a new mutation of the coronavirus was discovered, came in third in the world in terms of the daily increase in detected cases of COVID-19. This is reported on the Worldometers.info website.
On the eve, on December 23, 683 thousand new cases of coronavirus were registered in the world. The largest number of cases was detected, as usual, in the United States – 232 thousand. The second place was taken by Brazil – 46 thousand, the third by Great Britain – 39 thousand. The five anti-leaders are closed by Germany (31 thousand) and Russia (27 thousand).
For the entire time of the pandemic in the world, 79 million people fell ill with coronavirus, of which 1.7 million died and 55 million recovered. Most of the infected are registered in the USA (18 million), India (10 million) and Brazil (7 million).
As reported by EADaily, on December 14, UK Health Minister Matt Hancock said that British scientists have identified a mutated variant of the coronavirus, which may be associated with the rapid spread of the disease it causes.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson added that, according to preliminary data, the new strain may be 70% more infectious, but there is no evidence of its greater lethality. A number of countries, including Russia, have suspended flights to the United Kingdom.
