Russian embassy urges the U.S. to extend START

The document expires on February 5, 2021.

According to TASS, a commentary issued by the Russian Embassy in Washington on the 10th anniversary of the ratification of the document by the US Senate on Tuesday evening states that Russia calls on the United States to use the remaining period of time and extend the Treaty on Measures to Further Reduce and Limit Strategic Offensive Arms (START-3) for the benefit of two countries and the whole world.

“The document expires on February 5, 2021. The proposal of Russian President Vladimir Putin of December 2019 to extend the agreement for five years without preconditions remains in force”, – the embassy noted.

“The extension will give Russia and the United States time to find common ground on how to adapt the arms control regime to the current security environment. We urge the American side to use the short time remaining until February 5 to preserve the treaty for the benefit of our countries and the world”.

As noted in the diplomatic mission, the treaty is the latest bilateral agreement that clearly limits the world’s largest nuclear arsenals. By December 2020, Russia and the United States had carried out 328 inspections of missile bases, submarines and bombers, exchanged more than 21,000 notifications on the state of strategic offensive weapons.
