Germany opposes arms embargo for Turkey

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas has not supported Greece’s demands

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas spoke to Deutsche Presse-Agentur on Monday against Greece’s demand for an arms embargo on Turkey amid ongoing tensions in the eastern Mediterranean, according to tg channel Agenda Turkey.

“I don’t think the demand for an arms embargo on Turkey is strategically correct. This is not easy to do against a NATO partner. We have seen that NATO ally Turkey easily bought missiles from Russia because it could not buy them from the US”, –  Maas said.

The German minister also expressed hope that disputes in the eastern Mediterranean would be resolved through diplomatic channels.

“Of course, we still believe that there is a solution to the conflict and that we do not need to permanently remove the NATO partner from arms cooperation”, –  the politician stressed.
