Vladimir Zelensky’s team is betting heavily on Joe Biden, who is known for his anti-Russian stance and has a morbid interest in Ukraine
Given Kiev’s failure to push its agenda on resolving the conflict in Donbas, the Ukrainian president hopes for the Biden administration to intervene in the process. In an interview with the US publication The New York Times, Zelenskiy expressed hope that Biden would reinstate the post of special representative of the State Department in Ukraine. The post was previously held by Kurt Volker.
“I believe that the fact that the new US president understands the realities in Russia, in Ukraine, in Europe, will give a great opportunity to settle the conflict moments”, – Zelenskiy said.
This position is explained by the fact that Russia has seriously overtaken Ukraine in the Donbas direction politically. As noted by Kiev political analyst Aleksandr Polegskiy, Kiev’s legend of “Russian aggression” has not worked for a long time, and the Ukrainian leadership is unwilling to concede, although it understands that the end of the conflict is only possible on Moscow’s terms.
