The US embassy in Damascus said on its Twitter that the US will continue its sanctions policy against Syria as part of the law that Donald Trump signed in December 2019
The so-called “Caesar’s law” was signed into law by US President Donald Trump on 20 December 2019. It gives the US administration the power to impose restrictive measures against organisations and individuals that assist the Syrian government. The Syrian Foreign Ministry condemned the law as it believes the document is “based on false evidence fabricated by parties hostile to the Syrian people”.
The name of the sanctions package comes from the alias of a Syrian soldier who fled the country in 2013 and allegedly handed over material to Western human rights activists about the abuse of prisoners in Syrian jails.
“The US will continue these sanctions until Damascus takes irreversible steps towards a political solution [in Syria – note] in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254”, – the diplomatic office said.
