The team of advisers to U.S. President-elect Joe Biden is preparing to negotiate with Venezuelan authorities without necessarily requiring the departure of President Nicolas Maduro, three anonymous sources familiar with the situation told Bloomberg News Agency.
According to the agency, the Biden administration intends to demand “fair and just elections” in Venezuela in exchange for sanctions relief. Biden’s advisers will assess existing sanctions to determine which measures need to be expanded and which sanctions could be lifted if Maduro complies with their demands, the sources said. It is noted that the US intends to consult with international allies.
Russia, China, Iran and Cuba are also expected to play a role, the agency said.
