Turkey denounced the US sanctions as a “grave mistake” and threatened to retaliate for a move it said would damage ties between NATO allies.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry called the decision “inexplicable” given that Washington has repeatedly rejected Ankara’s offer to form a joint working group to allay US fears that the S-400 threatens NATO defenses.
“We call on the United States to review the unfair sanctions (and) to reverse this grave error as soon as possible”, – the statement said.
“Turkey is ready to tackle this problem through dialogue and diplomacy in a manner worthy of the spirit of the alliance”.
With Biden, who during the election campaign called Erdogan an autocrat and promised to support the Turkish opposition, it will definitely not work to solve the problem through dialogue.
