She also suggested that winter protests in the country would not be as numerous as during the warm season, but in her opinion, they would resume in spring on the same scale
The former presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya believes that sanctions against the Belarusian authorities should be extended, and that Germany should take more responsibility for supporting Belarus. She said this in an interview with Der Spiegel magazine, published on Monday.
According to Tikhanovskaya, the opposition is grateful to the EU for imposing sanctions on the Belarusian leadership, but the list of restrictive measures is “disproportionately small.”
“The sanctions need to be expanded. We hear many words of support, but we need action. We want to urge Germany to take more responsibility for Belarus. If Berlin starts, other EU countries will pick up on it, I am sure of it”, – she said.
According to the former presidential candidate, 30 thousand people have been detained in Belarus since August. She assumed that winter protests in the country will not be as numerous as in the warm season, but in her opinion, they will resume in spring on the same scale.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will receive Tikhanovskaya on Monday. She met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on 6 October.
