Police shot and killed an unidentified man who opened fire at the end of a choir performance at the Cathedral of St John the Evangelist on Sunday, TASS reported, citing the press office of the New York City Police Department.
“A man opened fire, police responded. The man was shot dead, he is dead”, – the police press office informed. The body of the shooter has been taken to St Luke’s Hospital.
City Police Department head Dermot Shea said the shooter did not manage to kill or injure anyone.
“By the grace of God no one was shot”, – he said during a Twitter press conference broadcast by the Metropolitan Police, noting that there are no preliminary versions yet on the shooter’s motives. – “This man may have had a criminal record, fingerprint examinations will have to establish that. Until then we will not disclose his name.”
Two semi-automatic pistols and a bag were found at the scene. Inside the bag were a container of petrol, rope, wires, several knives and a Bible. Police officers who quickly arrived on the scene fired 15 shots. The man died of a gunshot wound to the head.
