The Turkish-Armenian border was closed in 1993.
According to lenta.ua, during his visit to Baku, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey can open its border with Armenia if Yerevan demonstrates positive steps towards the situation in the region.
“If positive steps are taken, we will open the border. We do not intend to keep the borders with the neighboring country permanently closed”, – Erdogan said.
The Turkish President also admitted the possibility of creating a platform for cooperation between countries in the region, in particular Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iran, Georgia, the Russian Federation, as well as Armenia, thanks to which it would be possible to contribute to the achievement of peace in the region.
As you know, the Turkish-Armenian border was closed in 1993 due to Turkey’s support of Azerbaijan during the Armenian-Azerbaijani war in Nagorno-Karabakh. At the same time, diplomatic relations with Armenia were terminated. Ankara promised to open the border on condition that the Armenian troops would be withdrawn from Nagorno-Karabakh.
