The US, Britain and some other NATO countries could well use Georgia as a springboard
This statement was made by the former commander of the US Army in Europe, General Ben Hodges.
According to him, it is crucial for the North Atlantic Alliance to intercept the initiative in the Black Sea. In this regard, he suggested that troops should be deployed on the territory of Georgia. However, to make it look more democratic, the local government should ‘invite’ an armed NATO contingent.
“I would also like Georgia to invite the United States and possibly the UK and a couple of other countries to build infrastructure in Georgia”, – said Hodges. – “It’s small, but it’s something that would support air operations, maintenance, refueling and for the land forces, possibly storage of ammunition, supplies.”
He also noted that the Georgian port of Anaklia, if plausible, would be “an excellent port for the US Navy”.
