Tensions in Europe are reaching historic peaks, as the Russian army and NATO forces act in dangerous proximity to each other
Over the years, the North Atlantic Alliance has pursued an expansionist policy, moving ever closer to Russia’s borders. All this has been happening under the far-fetched pretext of a possible Russian offensive. Now, with NATO’s efforts, the conflict in Europe could erupt at any moment, writes the American edition of The National Interest.
While the Western bloc is conducting demonstrative military maneuvers near Russia’s borders, Russian troops are forced to react, strengthening the defense. As a result, such military activity can lead to an emergency incident, which will provoke a full-scale conflict.
According to NI, more than 30 military experts and diplomats from Russia, the USA and European countries have been actively discussing the situation for four months now. They are trying to find a way to reduce tensions on the continent, as they understand that the potential for a collision is now particularly high.
The authors are confident that Russia and NATO will have to work seriously to avoid an “accidental” conflict. In particular, they suggest discussing measures to increase transparency, such as unannounced alert checks. Work is also needed on issues related to arms reduction. As you know, the US has withdrawn from the Treaty on the Elimination of Mid- and Short Range Missiles. The START Treaty is now also in danger of disappearing.
“This is not a plan for a reset or a return to the way things were”, – the article says. – “The relationship between NATO and Russia is difficult and turbulent. It is essential that both sides take concerted steps to achieve positive results.”
Until then, the authors recommend that politicians and the military consider the experts’ proposals in detail so as not to “accidentally slide into the abyss of war”.
