The EU Minister’s conclusions on enlargement to the Western Balkans have been blocked and are unlikely to be adopted as planned at tomorrow’s EU Council meeting, Taniug was told in Brussels
The EU Council states that there are “a few more hours left until a possible agreement” and EU ministers general have put the issue of enlargement under “all other business” on the agenda for tomorrow’s meeting.
At the same time, it has been announced that the enlargement issue will not be on the agenda of the meeting of the 27 EU leaders who will arrive at the summit in Brussels on 10 and 11 December.
“It is possible that the issue of the enlargement will not be raised, but the agenda has already been filled”, – the assessment in Brussels said.
The German presidency of the EU Council says they are disappointed by the inability to move forward on the issue of the Northern Macedonia negotiation framework, which, at least for now, has blocked the process of adopting conclusions on all countries from the enlargement process.
“We have done everything we can to reach a compromise, but until then it is impossible to do so. We are dissatisfied with the fact that Bulgaria is blocking accession negotiations because of bilateral historical issues that are not in the context of enlargement”, – says a senior EU diplomat.
He said that Albania has also been blocked because of the blockade of the negotiation structure for Northern Macedonia.
“It’s all blocked, and it’s really disadvantageous”, – concluded in Brussels.
They say in Brussels that negotiations are continuing, but there is little optimism about the positive outcome of the year.
