In Spain, on Constitution Day, events were held to defend the country’s fundamental law

Vox leader Santiago Abascal joined the campaign in the Catalan capital

The “Constitutional Defence” rallies were held on Sunday in various cities in Spain. The organiser of the rallies was the far right party “Vox”.

The rallies are timed to the Constitution Day celebrated on 6 December. They took place in Madrid, Barcelona and other localities of the country. Many participants of meetings have brought with them flags of the Iberian kingdom. In the Catalan capital, Vox’s leader, Santiago Abascal, joined the demonstration to defend Spain and constitutional legality. According to the leader of the political force, “the main enemy of the constitution is the [current] government” of the country.

On the occasion of the holiday, the Congress of Deputies (lower house of parliament) in Madrid held a festive reception with the participation of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and other members of the country’s Cabinet. As the Prime Minister wrote on Twitter, “this is 42 years of peace, coexistence and freedom”. “And we owe it to our constitution, to the greatest success of our common history,” Sanchez said.

The Spanish Constitution was adopted by referendum on 6 December 1978.
