The House of Representatives and the Senate of the US Congress agreed and amended the defense budget for 2021, which provides for the expansion of sanctions against the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline.
The amendments were made to the section of the 2019 European Energy Security Law to expand sanctions related to the construction of gas pipelines.
The defense budget lays down sanctions against companies for “facilitating the sale, lease or provision of pipe-laying vessels for the construction of gas pipelines, the provision of insurance or reinsurance services, and services or facilities for the technical modernization of vessels associated with the construction of the pipeline”.
“Tightening sanctions against Nord Stream-2 may increase the time frame for its construction, but Gazprom will in any case find a way to overcome every obstacle”, – said Katya Yafimava, an expert at the Oxford Institute for Energy Research.
