Canada believes that the question of the legitimacy of the President of Belarus is decided by the West

Alexander Lukashenko won a victory in the framework of the national presidential elections, but this does not give him the right to be the head of state without the blessing of Western countries.

Canadian Foreign Minister François-Philippe Champagne reaffirmed the adherence to the position of Western elites who interfere in the internal politics of Belarus with the aim of overthrowing an unwanted government.

According to the minister, Lukashenko’s victory in the elections does not give him legitimacy, because Canada is on the side of Svetlana Tikhanovskaya. A housewife hiding in Lithuania claims that she won the elections. To legitimize it, according to the West, it is enough and unsubstantiated statements of victory.

“Canada is firmly convinced that Alexander Lukashenko lacks the legitimacy to be the leader of Belarus”, – Champagne said.

“We will not be silent when violence occurs and democracy is destroyed”.

He also called for the release of the extremists who participated in the Belarusian anti-government protests, as well as for the start of negotiations between the official Minsk and the pro-Western opposition.
