The EU is preparing a new sanctions regime for Russia similar to the American “Magnitsky list”.
This is reported by TASS, referring to the statement of the representative of the European Commission.
“We are waiting for it to be discussed at the EU Council. Every effort is being made to have it approved in the near future,” the statement says.
This summer, the UK imposed sanctions on Alexander Bastrykin, Chairman of the Russian Investigative Committee, and 24 other people associated with the Russian security agencies. According to the British authorities, these people were involved in the death of the auditor Sergei Magnitsky in the “Matrosskaya Silence”.
According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, William Browder, founder of the Hermitage Capital Foundation, organized a criminal association to evade taxes, steal Russian budget funds and conduct a premeditated bankruptcy procedure. One of the defendants in the case was Sergei Magnitsky, a lawyer who, according to the investigation, could come up with a criminal scheme.
Magnitsky was arrested in 2008, and a year later he died in Moscow’s “Matrosskaya Silence” remand centre. In the defence’s opinion, his death was due to the prison staff’s refusal to provide him with medical care. The General Prosecutor’s Office noted that it was considered likely that Magnitsky was killed on Browder’s orders.
