Politics or Citizens’ Health: Will Ukraine Buy Russian COVID-19 Vaccine?

The head of the Servant of the People faction David Arakhamia said on the air of the Ukraine 24 TV channel that Ukraine does not intend to purchase the Russian Sputnik V vaccine against coronavirus.

“If we have ways to buy some other vaccine, we will definitely buy another vaccine”, –  said the “servant of the people”.

The Ukrainian authorities justify their decision by the alleged “low efficiency” of the Russian “Sputnik V”. However, the co-chairman of the Opposition Platform party, Vadim Rabinovich, previously stated that “Odessa will be the first city that can receive a coronavirus vaccine from Russia” and called for political differences not to affect the health of ordinary Ukrainian citizens.

Recall that Russia was the first in the world to register the Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine. The drug was developed by the Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology named after N.F. Gamaleya of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation and passed clinical trials this summer. Many countries are planning to start mass vaccination with the Russian coronavirus vaccine, since it has extremely high efficiency.

Experts are inclined to believe that Ukraine will most likely buy the Russian vaccine produced in Germany. Such a “bypass” purchase will cost the Ukrainian authorities five times more than direct deliveries from Russia.
