Topics on which the parties could deepen their partnership include fighting the coronavirus pandemic, countering cybercriminals, WHO reform, environmental issues, antitrust policy and the rollout of 5G.
The European Union intends to offer the administration of US President-elect Joseph Biden to restart bilateral relations, strengthening cooperation to more effectively counter “authoritarian regimes.” This was announced on Sunday by the British newspaper Financial Times, citing sources.
According to her, the European Commission (EC), together with the office of the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, has developed an 11-page draft document entitled “A New Agenda for EU-US Relations in the Context of Global Changes.” In particular, it talks about the need to leave behind the differences between the parties that arose during the administration of the current US President Donald Trump in order to jointly respond to the “strategic challenge from China.” The text also says that relations between Brussels and Washington “need to be renewed” if they are both interested in defending the interests of a democratic world against “authoritarian powers” and “closed economies that exploit the open nature of our societies.”
Among the topics on which the parties could deepen their partnership or bring their positions closer are the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, countering cybercriminals, reform of the World Health Organization, environmental issues, antitrust policy, deployment of fifth generation (5G) communication networks. It is noted that the EU and the US intend to pay special attention to interaction in the field of taxation, given the plans of Brussels to introduce a digital tax for American technology companies.
The text, excerpts from which the publication cites, emphasizes that the EU supports Biden’s idea of holding a summit of democratic countries. According to the authors of the document, the union of Brussels and Washington should be “the basis of a new global alliance of like-minded partners.”
It is planned that this document will be submitted for approval to the national leaders of the EU member states at the next summit of the union, which will be held on December 10-11. The text also contains a proposal to organize an EU-US summit in the first half of 2021 to showcase a new stage in relations between the parties.
