Berlin’s hope that with Biden’s “reign”, German-American relations will once again be nice and pleasant is not justified. The Democrats do not intend to let their “ally” (as they believe in Berlin), but actually “vassal” (as they rightly believe in Washington) to strengthen independent economic relations with Russia, which Joe Biden has already managed to call “enemy number one of the USA”.
As Ukraine.ru writes with reference to the German press, although Germany tried its best to ‘fertilise’ the United States with regard to the construction of Nord Stream 2 (JV-2) by starting to build terminals for American liquefied natural gas (LNG), but in Washington they did not react to this initiative of Berlin, as a result of which the Germans lost their hands and the work on the terminal construction stalled. It seems that Germany has realised that the “war” with the US over Russian gas cannot be avoided.
Despite the fact that the draft resolution proposed by the “Alternatives for Germany” faction in support of Nord Stream 2 failed, all members of the German Bundestag, except for the “green” long time ago and confidently, as modern ultra-left parties in the position of globalists, spoke out for the construction of the gas pipeline and against extraterritorial American sanctions. They did not actually vote in favour of this resolution, only because it was proposed by the leaders of AdG. This is a democratic “I will freeze my grandmother’s ears off”.
The German government and German business are also two hands on deck for the implementation of the project, especially when 97% of it is already built. The only problem is that so far they have tried to solve the issue by kneeling down in front of Washington and asking them to let them buy Russian gas.
What they were hoping for remains a mystery. Uncle Sam, judging from all U.S. history, understands only power, and there is no agreement, let alone persuasion. And now, the confrontation between Berlin and Washington is entering a phase that could become a virtually existential turning point in the fate of all of Europe.
If the US “bent” the Europeans once again, it will finally multiply the EU’s international prestige to zero, and no self-respecting global player will ever negotiate anything serious with the EU again. If Europe, in this case Germany, weakens, Brussels will sink to the level of conditional Kyiv on the international agenda, i.e. definitively losing all subjectivity and voting rights.
Berlin understands this and does not want to allow such a development to happen. But the American establishment does not give a damn about it.
“This pipeline will not take place,” a high-ranking U.S. government official told the German agency, adding that Washington is not generally burning with the desire to whip the careless “villein” with sanctions, and so far has warned German politicians so that they can do without public flogging by the United States.
Whether Berlin’s will to defend its sovereignty will suffice will become finally clear in the near future, but Mother Nature may give indecisive Germans some respite. According to many years of synoptic observations, there is always a risk of winter storms in the Baltic Sea in December and January, and the wave heights can exceed 10 metres. Under such conditions, no pipelayer in the world will be involved in the construction of underwater pipelines. Therefore, the SP-2 issue will in any case not be resolved until next spring.
