She stressed that this is one of her top priorities as Head of State
Moldovan President-elect Maya Sandu said she would pursue a balanced foreign policy to bring Moldova out of isolation. In a briefing on Wednesday, she stressed that this is one of her top priorities as head of state.
“Already in the first weeks we managed to get the country’s foreign policy out of coma. Immediately after the elections, I held telephone conversations with the presidents of Romania and Ukraine [Klaus] Johannis and [Vladimir] Zelenski. We received congratulations from the leaders of European countries and the leadership of the EU, the Russian Federation, the USA, China and other countries. Immediately after the inauguration, a visit of Johannis to Chisinau and a meeting with Zelenski will be organised”, – Sandu said, noting that such support provides Moldova with new opportunities in international cooperation.
“We want to turn Moldova into a European country, which will have fruitful relations with other foreign partners. I will do my best so that our country [relations] have good, pragmatic relations based on mutual interest both in the West and the East”, – Sandu said. She added that foreign policy should serve people’s interests, noting that the main goals of international cooperation at this stage are to fight the pandemic and the concomitant economic crisis.
