The Ministry of Defence of Canada said that a handover ceremony was held in Baghdad on 24 November
The Canadian military handed over to their Danish counterparts the reins of power to NATO’s non-combat mission in Iraq, which since 2018 has been led by generals of the Canadian armed forces. This was reported on Tuesday by the Canadian Defense Ministry.
“Canada has transferred the management of the NATO mission in Iraq to Denmark”, – declared the Ministry of Defence. The agency specified that the solemn ceremony of transferring authority from Canadians to Danes took place on Tuesday in Baghdad.
The decision to establish NATO’s non-battle mission in Iraq was taken by the alliance members in July 2018. The task of the NATO trainers is to create an effective national security system in Iraq and to train relevant personnel. Until November 2020, Canada took over the leadership of the mission, which provided 250 instructors for the alliance operation. The exact size of the alliance mission was not reported.
In the spring of 2020, NATO partially suspended the mission against the backdrop of a pandemic.
