For the first time in nearly five decades, a heavy icebreaker from the US Coast Guard will not be supporting Antarctic scientific missions in the coming months, but will be working in the Arctic near Alaska, the icebreaker commander recently said.
Williams Voityra said this at the Wilson Center.
The USCGC Polar Star (WAGB-10) will be deployed in December “to project US sovereignty” over its waters off Alaska and “to strengthen rules-based order in the Arctic.
