It is planned to send an additional 400-500 people to the region, said International Committee of the Red Cross President Peter Maurer
Peter Maurer, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), announced a fourfold increase in the ICRC contingent in Nagorno-Karabakh. He said this in an interview with the RBC publication published on Tuesday.
“We realized as the conflict was breaking out that we needed to do more. If before the war the budget for our mission in the region was ₣10 million, then next year it will be ₣45 million. We had quite a few people there. Now we plan to send an additional 400-500 people to the region. We have already increased our presence in recent days”, – Maurer told the newspaper.
The ICRC President added that the Red Cross has offices in Yerevan, Baku, as well as representatives are returning to Stepanakert and plans to open one or two more offices.
On 13 November, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree establishing an inter-ministerial centre for humanitarian response for Nagorno-Karabakh.
On 20 November the first convoys with humanitarian aid were sent to Stepanakert, and on 21 November the first convoy arrived at the site. The Ministry of Emergency Situations is delivering a total of 345 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Nagorno-Karabakh – construction materials for the restoration of social infrastructure and homes of the affected population.
