The power scenario in Transnistria is becoming more and more likely, as the new President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, aggravates the situation, not fully realizing the consequences of her actions.
As previously reported by News Front, according to the results of the presidential elections in Moldova, the leader of the pro-Western Action and Solidarity party, Maia Sandu, won. In the second round of voting, she won 57.75% of the vote. As the winner of the race, she has already become famous for her demand to withdraw Russian peacekeepers from the PMR, which caused a wide public outcry.
In Transnistria itself, they have already warned about the prospect of a resumption of hostilities. Valeriu Litskai, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the PMR, drew parallels with the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, noting that Romania, which has its own interests here, could play a destabilizing role for Turkey in Moldova.
And although the Moldovan political scientist Cornel Churea urges not to take Sandu’s words about the withdrawal of the peacekeepers seriously, now she makes statements not as a street oppositionist, but as head of state.
“Sandu has probably not yet realized that she is no longer speaking in front of a crowd on the street”, – notes Marina Perevozkina, a columnist for the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper.
“Now her statements are still purely ritualistic, but will she want to repeat Saakashvili’s “feat”, trying to resolve the Transnistrian issue by force?”
Such a scenario cannot be ruled out, the publicist emphasizes. In this Sandu can count on the help of Ukraine. Military analyst Oleksiy Leonkov noted earlier that it was not for nothing that the Ukrainian army had been prepared for a full-scale war for so many years. This experience will really come in handy for her, because in the event of the resumption of the Transnistrian conflict, Russia will have to act in a radical way.
First of all, it will have to recognize Transnistria, as was the case with South Ossetia in 2008 against the background of Mikhail Saakashvili’s military adventure.
“The corridor to Transnistria through Ukraine will have to be broken through with the help of military force”, – Perevozkina continues.
“This already means a big war”.
