US ceases to be a party to the Open Skies Treaty

Today, November 22, six months will expire since the American administration sent a notice of withdrawal from the document to the depositories (Canada and Hungary) and the rest of the DON member countries.

After the withdrawal, the United States will no longer be able to fly over any territories of the parties to the agreement to monitor military activities, as well as have access to data obtained during the flights.

The main reason for this step was the alleged failure to fulfill the agreement on the part of Russia.

In a May 21 statement by Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, Washington may be ready to reconsider its withdrawal decision if Russia “demonstrates a return to full compliance with this confidence-building treaty”.

US President Donald Trump then announced a chance to reach a new agreement.
