If Igor Dodon at least sometimes met with the head of the PMR Vadim Krasnoselsky to resolve some issues, Maia Sandu would hardly be also supportive of Transnistria.
As previously reported by News Front, according to the results of the presidential elections in Moldova, the leader of the pro-Western Action and Solidarity party, Maia Sandu, won. Against this background, fears arose in the expert community about the future of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic. There is an opinion that Sandu can provoke an escalation of tension in the region and even use military force against the inhabitants of the left bank of the Dniester
In particular, the President of Moldova has already announced that the Russian peacekeepers must leave Transnistria. Despite this, the Moldovan political scientist Cornel Churya is sure that Sandu’s position on the PMR has not yet been fully formed.
“Transnistria is not her strong point”, – Churya notes.
The expert drew attention to the fact that the statement about the Russian peacekeepers was made in an interview with Evropeyskaya Pravda, one of the most pro-Western publications in Ukraine. In this regard, anti-Russian attacks were quite expected. On the other hand, Sandu did not say anything new, because all the presidents of Moldova, except for Dodon, demanded the withdrawal of the Russian peacekeeping contingent.
“Only no one specified exactly when this should happen. In this sense, some ambiguity was allowed”, – explains Churya in a commentary to the Ukraina.ru edition.
“Dodon avoided this topic, although he did not abandon it. Sandu has to make such statements because they correspond to the typical position of the pro-Western president of Moldova. There is nothing terrible about that”.
On the other hand, the cooling of relations between Chisinau and Tiraspol is inevitable. If Dodon even occasionally held meetings with Krasnoselsky, Sandu probably won’t do that either. At the same time, the stumbling block of the parties now is precisely the fact that Transnistria is not allowed to make important decisions in Moldova.
“Previously, expert groups worked to work out such solutions within the Berlin + package. Maybe they will continue to gather, but during Sandu’s presidency, there is no need to expect any quick decisions. If it was not resolved under Dodon, it won’t be done under her”, – stated the Moldovan analyst.
