Democrats are questioning their green course as Joe Biden’s team has appointed Michael McCabe a member of the EPA’s think tank. In the past, he helped DuPont avoid liability for a toxic leak.
McCabe previously worked as a communications strategy consultant for DuPont, one of the world’s largest chemical companies. It was then that the company faced a wave of litigation, as it dumped more than 7 thousand tons of waste containing PFOC in West Virginia. As a result, the chemicals got into the drinking water.
Perfluorooctanoic acid or PFOA is best known for non-stick coatings and water-repellent garments. The substance can cause numerous diseases, including cancer. It is very difficult to decompose and has been found by scientists in animals around the world.
McCabe helped DuPont escape responsibility. Until now, the US government has not set federal limits on the content of PFOA in drinking water. Now McCabe, a lobbyist for the chemical industry, will influence the EPA by overseeing the Chemical Safety Council.
“This newly elected President says we need to listen to science. Are you really listening to science or an industry insider?” – Erin Brockovich, a prominent American environmentalist, told The Guardian.
