Ukraine should not expect to join NATO in the foreseeable future, but it has time to fulfill its obligations to the alliance
“There is no shortcut to membership in NATO. As for the reforms, Ukraine has made commitments and it is crucial that they are implemented”, – said Vineta Kleine, Director of the NATO Information and Documentation Centre.
According to her, Kiev must work intensively to strengthen measures to combat corruption and ensure ‘democratic control’ over the army and security forces. At the same time, Kleine emphasised that it took her home Latvia 10 years of “very thorough and hard work” to implement reforms in order to get closer to NATO membership.
