London urged Washington to return to the Iranian nuclear deal

The UK also expects Iran to meet its requirements, said UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace

The UK calls on the United States to support the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan (JCPOA) for Iran’s nuclear programme and also looks to Iran to meet its requirements. UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said on Sky News on Thursday.

“We support the JCPOA, which was an attempt by several states to force Iran to comply with the nuclear conditions [of the deal] in exchange for a relaxation of the sanctions regime. We believe this is the best way to achieve peace and stability, and we will continue to support it. We call on the United States to return to supporting the JCPOA, and on the Iranians to ensure these conditions are met,” he said.

The JCPOA was signed by Iran, the permanent members of the UN Security Council (Russia, UK, China, USA, France) and Germany in 2015. The deal restricted Tehran’s nuclear development in exchange for the lifting of UN sanctions and unilateral restrictive measures by the US and the European Union. In 2018, the US announced its withdrawal from the JCPOA and introduced economic sanctions against Iran. Tehran announced the fifth phase of its departure from the nuclear deal in January 2020.
