Another 45 people were injured, according to police reports
At least seven people were killed in Kampala, Uganda’s capital, in clashes between police and demonstrators protesting the detention of opposition politician and candidate in the upcoming presidential election musician Robert Kiagulagulanya Ssentama, known as Bobi Wine. This was reported on Thursday by Ugandan police representative Fred Ananga.
“We have counted seven people killed and 45 injured since the riots on 18 November”, – France-Presse quoted him as saying. – “The situation has now calmed down in all the areas affected by the violent protests”.
Boby Vine was on a campaign trip to the east of the country when he was detained by police. He planned to hold a mass rally on Wednesday afternoon in downtown Masaka, but ended up in jail for violating norms against the coronavirus pandemic. News of Vain’s arrest has led groups of his supporters to the streets of Uganda’s biggest cities, including Kampala, Masaki Mukono, Jinju and Mityana. Noisy demonstrations were held everywhere, with clashes with police and law enforcement forces.
The Uganda Electoral Commission registered Bobi Vain as a candidate for the upcoming presidential elections on 14 January 2021 on 3 November. A further 10 people became candidates, including the current Head of State, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
