The German Foreign Ministry called for the European human rights architecture to be prepared for the challenges

Minister Heiko Maas also called on all CoE countries to recognise the decisions taken by the ECHR.

The European human rights architecture must be prepared for the challenges of the future. Such a call is made in a statement issued on Wednesday by German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on the occasion of the transfer of the chairmanship of the CoE Committee of Ministers to Germany from Greece for six months.

According to the minister, the coronavirus pandemic has shown that human rights work “must constantly adapt to changing conditions”. “We must prepare our European human rights architecture for the challenges of the future,” said the Foreign Minister.

At the same time, the German Foreign Minister called on all CE countries to recognise the decisions taken by the European Court of Human Rights. “Too often, these judgments are not fully implemented or are not implemented at all. This has to change,” Maas said.

The German minister also referred to the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. “We welcome the truce, but the original conflict has not yet been resolved. We therefore encourage the parties to work towards a long-term political solution within the OSCE Minsk Group,” Maas said.
